Det. John Mulligan is shot and killed.

Mulligan is shot and killed in his car while on a paid detail outside the Walgreen’s at 980 American Legion Highway. Sean Ellis and Tracy Patterson are subsequently convicted of the murder. Patterson is released from prison in 2006, but Ellis remains in custody until his conviction is reversed after questions arise over evidence presented in the trial in 2015. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s office decides not to re-try the case in 2018. A documentary film about the Sean Ellis case is made in 2020.*
